Fred Scutcher

Fred Scutcher retired after he had been at the wheel of Green Line Coaches since 1931, shortly after they were introduced, he was a veteran of the First World War. He served as a Sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps and was awarded the Military Medal for action during the Battle of the Somme. All Officers and many men had been killed in the heavy fighting, and he took command to hold a vital section of the line. In the New Year Honours List of 1919 he received the D.C.M. A more peaceful activity in which he was engaged for Fifty years was the ringing of the tenor bell at his local Parish Church in Elmers End.
